When you encounter Passato Remoto in novels
don’t get stuck, focus on recognizing the root of the verb.

Here’s the Matta secret: when you’re reading an Italian novel, don’t be thrown off by strange verb forms—focus on identifying the root of the verb.

What do I mean by that? You may never use the passato remoto in conversation, and you probably don’t have every conjugation memorized. That’s perfectly fine. What is essential is learning how to recognize it when you see it.

The passato remoto is often short, accented in unexpected places, and completely unrelated to the present tense. Think: disse, fece, ebbe, andò, vide, fu.

So take a breath and relax. Find the root of the verb. Identify the infinitive. Understand the meaning in context. Mission accomplished.

TURN EVERYDAY OBJECTS INTO ITALIAN LESSONS

When you practice at home, choose any object around you—a lamp, a book, a coffee cup—and describe it in Italian…but with true Italian flair.

Don’t just list words. 
Bring the object to life.
 Gesture wildly. Exaggerate your voice. Raise an eyebrow. Add drama. Play the part.

Say “Questa tazza è fantastica!” like you’re presenting it on stage.

“Sangue” non è solo “blood”… è destino!

“Sangue” is not just “blood”… it’s destiny!

In italiano, sangue può significare famiglia, carattere, ereditarietà o persino il temperamento (“avere il sangue caldo”). De Giovanni gioca con tutte queste sfumature nel titolo La Condanna del Sangue.

In Italian, sangue can refer to family, character, lineage, or even temperament (“to have hot blood”). De Giovanni plays with all these shades of meaning in the title La Condanna del Sangue.
